We’ve all heard the basic tips to de-stress: go for a walk! Get some fresh air! Practice deep breathing! But when it’s approximately a zillion degrees outside and the kids are clamoring for attention, those things can be easier said than done. We asked Ema for her tips on de-stressing, and we also asked for her ideas on staying cool. We combined her tips into practical strategies that can help you de-stress and keep cool despite rising temperatures.
1. Practice yoga or stretching:
Yoga and stretching exercises offer a perfect combination of relaxation and physical activity. Combine this with some deep breathing, and you’re sure to feel cooler in no time. Got kids? Get them involved with fun animal poses, loud oms and tiger roars. You don’t have to be the perfect yogi to get the calming effects!
2. Listen to calming music:
Music has a profound impact on our emotions. Create a playlist of soothing, calming tunes that help you unwind. Whether it's classical melodies or nature sounds, let the music wash away your stress and create a serene atmosphere. Play this throughout the house and hopefully everyone will feel the shift in the emotional atmosphere, bringing down the energy (and the temperature).
3. Meditate or practice mindfulness:
Okay, this one can be tough with kids, but hear us out. Try practicing this as a group! Gather everyone (but make sure they have their own space). Sit comfortably and focus your attention on the present moment. This practice can cultivate a calm mind and helps you let go of stress and worries. Make it even more effective with cool compresses on the back of everyone’s neck or on their foreheads. It’s like a mini-spa moment, and with any luck, it’ll lead right into a well-deserved naptime.
4. Engage in creative activities:
Artistic endeavors, such as painting or drawing, offer a therapeutic outlet for stress. Allow your creativity to flow freely by joining in with the kids on an art project! Watercolors in particular can be very relaxing. Whatever medium you choose, just have fun with it, and try to remember that any mess can be cleaned up.
5. Get wet:
This trick works on both kids and adults. When attitudes need adjustment, just get wet! Play outside with the hose or plop the kids in a cool bath with a popsicle. While it hasn’t been scientifically proven, we’re pretty sure a popsicle bath can cure just about any ailment. And of course, a refreshing bath or shower for yourself can help you cool down while providing a calming experience.
6. Use a lifeline:
Still feeling stuck? Reach out to a friend or family member for some commiseration. Social connections are vital for our well-being. If no one’s picking up, you’re still in luck, because Ema’s always ready to listen! Tap the orb and ask Ema for other ideas to beat the heat and keep stress at bay, or check out the variety of topics in the Friendship Circles and chat with other females who understand where you’re coming from–because they’re there too.
In today's fast-paced world, stress has become an inevitable part of our lives. It's important to take a step back and prioritize our mental and physical well-being. With the added challenge of staying cool during hot days, finding effective ways to de-stress becomes even more crucial. By prioritizing your well-being and adopting some of these practices, you'll find yourself better equipped to navigate stress and maintain a cool, calm, and collected mindset–no matter how obscene the temps may be.
